Reduction in PCBs
Research on comprehensive Ayurvedic rejuvenation programs has examined changes in persistent fat-soluble toxicants, cardiovascular and stress-related health markers, and brain activity during Shirodhara.
The programs were historically described in the research as Maharishi Rejuvenation treatments. They were based on Ayurvedic Panchakarma, a personalized approach that combines purification and rejuvenation procedures rather than relying on one isolated treatment.
In one longitudinal investigation, participants experienced significant reductions in two persistent fat-soluble toxicants following the Ayurvedic purification program: PCBs decreased by 46%, while beta-HCH decreased by 58%.
A separate study of 31 adults examined cholesterol, oxidative-stress markers, pulse, blood pressure, and anxiety before and after a three-to-five-day rejuvenation program. Several favorable changes were reported during treatment or at the follow-up approximately 2.9 months later.
Research on Shirodhara also used electroencephalography, or EEG, to examine changes in brain activity during the traditional Ayurvedic treatment.
Together, these studies suggest that comprehensive Ayurvedic rejuvenation programs may influence several aspects of physical and mental functioning. However, they were separate studies with different methods, participants, and outcomes, and their findings should not be interpreted as proof that the programs prevent or treat any particular disease.
Ayurveda traditionally emphasizes both purification and rejuvenation as important parts of maintaining balance and supporting health.
The rejuvenation programs examined in this research were comprehensive and individualized. Depending on the participant, they could include specialized Ayurvedic treatments, herbalized oils, heat therapies, dietary measures, rest, daily routines, and other procedures associated with Panchakarma.
The historical term Maharishi Rejuvenation treatments referred to a coordinated Ayurvedic program rather than one individual treatment.
The purpose of studying the complete program was to determine whether a short period of intensive Ayurvedic care could produce measurable physiological changes.
Because multiple procedures were used together, the research did not establish that any one treatment was independently responsible for the reported outcomes.
One longitudinal investigation measured blood levels of persistent fat-soluble toxicants before and after participants completed the Ayurvedic purification procedure.
The researchers reported significant changes in the average levels of two compounds:
PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, are a group of industrial chemicals that can persist in the environment and accumulate in body fat.
Beta-HCH is an organochlorine pesticide-related compound. Like PCBs, it is considered lipophilic, meaning that it tends to dissolve in and accumulate within fatty tissue.
The preliminary findings were presented in connection with the 127th Annual Meeting and Exposition of the American Public Health Association in 1999.
A more detailed peer-reviewed study was subsequently published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine in 2002. That publication included both a cross-sectional comparison and a prospective longitudinal evaluation of the Ayurvedic purification procedure. The authors concluded that the results generally suggested the procedure may help reduce the body burden of certain fat-soluble toxicants.
The research did not establish that the program removes every type of environmental chemical or that reducing blood levels of these compounds prevents or treats a specific disease.
Fat-soluble toxicants may accumulate in fatty tissues and remain in the body for extended periods.
Some persistent environmental chemicals can continue moving through soil, water, plants, animals, and the human food chain even after their use has been restricted.

The presence of a chemical in the body does not, by itself, prove that it caused a particular symptom or disease.
A separate study examined 31 adults who completed three to five days of Ayurvedic rejuvenation treatments.

The research was published under the title “Improvement in Cardiovascular Risk Factors Through Panchakarma Purification Procedures” in the Journal of Research and Education in Indian Medicine. The study is also cited in a peer-reviewed review of Ayurveda and cardiovascular health.
Total cholesterol decreased during the rejuvenation program.
The researchers also reported a 7.5% increase in HDL cholesterol at the 2.9-month follow-up among the subgroup identified in the study.
HDL is commonly described as “good” cholesterol because of its role in transporting cholesterol through the bloodstream. However, HDL is only one of many factors involved in evaluating cardiovascular health.
The study was small and did not determine whether these changes reduced participants’ risk of heart attack, stroke, or another cardiovascular event.
The researchers measured lipid peroxide as an indicator of oxidative damage to fats.
Lipid peroxide levels initially increased during the Ayurvedic program and later decreased to below their original levels at the 2.9-month follow-up.
The researchers interpreted this pattern as a possible physiological response occurring during and after the purification procedures.
The study did not establish precisely why the lipid peroxide levels changed or which part of the program was responsible.
Pulse and diastolic blood pressure were reduced following the treatments.
Diastolic blood pressure is the lower number in a blood-pressure measurement. It reflects the pressure within the arteries while the heart rests between beats.
The available research summary does not establish whether the changes were clinically meaningful for people with diagnosed hypertension or whether they continued beyond the study’s follow-up period.
Measures of state anxiety improved significantly.
State anxiety refers to the level of tension or anxiety a person experiences at a particular time, rather than a diagnosed long-term anxiety disorder.
A residential Ayurvedic program may include several factors that could influence stress, including rest, treatments, changes in diet, reduced everyday demands, and a structured daily schedule.
The study did not determine which of these factors contributed most strongly to the reported improvement.
Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment in which a continuous, gentle stream of warm liquid is directed over the forehead.
It is commonly included in personalized Ayurvedic programs to encourage deep relaxation and support balance in the nervous system.
Researchers have used EEG measurements to examine how brain activity changes during Shirodhara.
The research described two contrasting patterns of brain activity during the procedure. One involved a lower level of activation resembling patterns observed during periods of deep meditation. The other reflected periods of increased activation or excitation.
The researchers also reported increased coherence between areas of brain activity.
EEG coherence refers to the degree to which electrical activity measured in different parts of the brain follows a coordinated pattern. It is a research measurement and does not, on its own, prove improved neurological health or expanded consciousness.
Later research involving healthy volunteers also reported that Shirodhara produced a deeply relaxed state and was associated with changes in alpha brain activity, pulse, breathing, blood pressure, mood, and stress.
The simultaneous presence of relaxation-related and activation-related patterns may suggest that Shirodhara does not simply produce sleep or sedation.
Instead, it may support a state in which the body is deeply relaxed while aspects of mental activity remain alert.
This type of state is sometimes described as restful alertness.
However, descriptions such as “more comprehensive states of conscious awareness” are interpretations of the EEG findings rather than directly measured medical outcomes.
The research does not establish that Shirodhara treats neurological or psychological disorders.
These studies examined Ayurvedic rejuvenation from several different perspectives.
The toxicant research considered whether a comprehensive purification program could influence persistent compounds stored within the body.
The 31-participant study examined cardiovascular, biochemical, and psychological measurements before and after a short Ayurvedic program.
The Shirodhara research investigated whether a traditional Ayurvedic treatment produced measurable changes in brain activity and physiological relaxation.
Together, the findings suggest that Ayurvedic rejuvenation programs may have effects extending beyond the immediate experience of rest or massage.
They also illustrate the importance of studying Ayurveda as a coordinated system. Panchakarma programs may combine treatments, diet, rest, daily routines, and other individualized recommendations that are intended to work together.
At the same time, these studies do not establish that the programs prevent or cure disease. Each finding requires careful interpretation and further independent research.
The findings presented on this page came from separate studies rather than one large clinical trial.

A published study conducted at The Raj found that a five-day Panchakarma program was associated with a 46% reduction in PCBs and a 58% reduction in beta-HCH, two persistent fat-soluble environmental toxicants.

Research on comprehensive Ayurvedic rejuvenation programs has reported reductions in certain fat-soluble toxicants, improvements in cardiovascular and stress-related markers, and measurable changes in brain activity during Shirodhara.
A double-blind randomized study of 176 adults with chronic arthritis reported immediate improvements in pain, stiffness, and range of motion following a specialized Vedic vibration treatment, with nearly three-quarters reporting at least 60% pain relief.
A randomized controlled study of 127 older adults with mild hypertension found that Transcendental Meditation reduced systolic blood pressure by 10.7 mm Hg and diastolic pressure by 6.4 mm Hg compared with a lifestyle education control.
