One of the top recommendations that is given to guests at The Raj Ayurveda Health Spa is to add daily oil massage to their daily routine when they return home. The effects of daily Ayurveda oil massage (recommended before bathing in the morning) are multifold: Not only will a morning oil massage help pull toxins from the skin (the largest organ in the body and an important organ for the elimination of toxins), it also leaves a protective film that will act as a barrier between your skin and harmful environmental elements throughout the day.
In addition, daily oil massage gave help relieve the joint pain that is often associated with Vata imbalance.
Here the top four things you should know to incorporate a daily oil massage into your self-care routine.
- Choosing the Right Oil:
The foundation of a nourishing daily oil massage lies in selecting the appropriate oil for your unique constitution and needs. Ayurveda offers a variety of oils, each with its own therapeutic properties. For instance, warm sesame oil is often recommended for individuals with Vata dosha, while cooling coconut oil can benefit those with Pitta dosha. Individuals with Kapha dosha may find stimulation from lighter oils like almond or sunflower. Consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner can help you determine the most suitable oil for your specific requirements.
While oil massage helps balance all doshas — especially when you use oil infused with specific herbs that target Vata, Pitta or Kapha — it is especially good for balancing Vata. In fact, many people consider a small container of sesame oil it be a travel essential. After a long plane or car ride, there is nothing more grounding than an oil massage followed by a good soak in a hot bath. (Add in some Vata tea and aroma oil to your travel kit and you are well on your way to sidestepping the jangling effects of travel)
But the beneficial effects of oil massage don’t stop there. Research also suggests that sesame oil (the oil most often used in Ayurvedic massage) selectively stops malignant skin cancer cells from growing in laboratory tissue culture, and at the same time allows normal skin cells to proliferate.
Research shows:
According to the study, sesame and safflower oils selectively inhibited the grown of malignant melanoma cell cultures, but coconut, olive and mineral oils did not. The traditional Ayurveda texts specifically recommend sesame oil as the massage oil of choice to promote health and longevity.
(One note of caution: sesame oil has natural heating properties. Those with a Pitta body type or with Pitta imbalances may need to opt for more cooling oil. Sesame oil can cause rashes or redness in Pitta-sensitive skin. If you are in this category, you might want to try coconut or olive oil. Although these oils have not been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer, they will help to pacify Vata and to remove toxins.)
-
Warming the Oil:
Before commencing your daily oil massage, it is essential to warm the oil. Heating the oil enhances its effectiveness, as warm oil promotes relaxation and better absorption. To warm the oil, place the bottle in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes. By applying warm oil, you enable its healing properties to penetrate deeply into your tissues, promoting balance and rejuvenation.
-
Slow and Mindful Strokes:
Daily oil massage is not just a physical practice but a mindful ritual that connects your hands with your body. Begin by applying a small amount of oil to your hands and slowly massage your entire body, using long, sweeping strokes on the long bones and circular strokes on the joints. Using slow, gentle, and rhythmic strokes, you can apply the oil to your skin, allowing it to penetrate the layers and nourish your tissues. This practice not only nurtures your body but also calms your mind, fostering a sense of tranquility and deep relaxation.
-
Allowing the Oil to Absorb:
After applying the oil to your entire body, it is beneficial to allow it to absorb before rinsing off or bathing. This absorption period allows the oil to work its magic, nourishing and rejuvenating your tissues. During this time, engage in activities that promote relaxation, such as meditation, deep breathing, or simply enjoying a few moments of stillness. Embrace this opportunity to connect with yourself and experience the transformative effects of daily oil massage.
The Healing Power of Doing This Daily:
Daily oil massage, known as Abhyanga in Ayurveda, holds immense healing potential. Beyond its physical benefits of lubricating joints, improving circulation, enhancing lymphatic flow, and supporting detoxification, it nurtures your mind, body, and spirit. Regular practice can help reduce stress, balance the doshas, nourish the skin, and promote overall well-being. It is a powerful tool for self-care and an opportunity to honor yourself and prioritize your health.
Incorporating daily oil massage into your routine is a beautiful act of self-love and self-care. By choosing the right oil, warming it, using slow and mindful strokes, and allowing the oil to absorb, you can experience the profound healing benefits of this ancient Ayurvedic practice. Discover the nurturing and rejuvenating power of daily oil massage and embark on a journey towards balance, vitality, and well-being.
What does the research say?
Researchers have known for years that linoleic acid, an essential polyunsaturated fatty acid that is present in small quantities in the body, inhibits many kinds of cancer growth. But because pure linoleic acid is highly unstable and can irritate a person’s skin and eyes, it cannot be used or ingested safely. In the above-mentioned research study, scientists used the whole oil, rather than trying to isolate the active ingredient, thus avoiding unnatural side effects.
Research also shows that oil massage is an important component in removing synthetic chemicals from our physiology. In the US there are thousands of these kinds of chemicals used in various types of industry or agriculture. These toxins are present everywhere in our environment and can be found in virtually every living organism around the world. Regardless of our lifestyle, profession, eating habits, or geographic location, by the time we are 40 years old, our toxin level is substantial.
A study on clients participating in the traditional Ayurveda purification treatments (Panchakarma) at The Raj showed that blood levels of these chemicals were reduced by 50% after a 5-day course of treatment. Because these harmful chemicals are fat-soluble, the toxins can be “washed” from our fat cells by the deeply penetrating sesame oil (as well as by other components of the treatment program.)
Integrating a 10-minute sesame oil massage into your morning routine can have a significant impact on reducing Vata imbalances, purifying the skin and maintaining balance throughout the body.
