Ayurvedic Constipation Program

The Raj Program for Constipation, based on the science of Maharishi Ayurveda, provides the most comprehensive and natural approach to constipation available today, both in terms of identifying causes and in providing treatment.

Because many imbalances can contribute to chronic constipation, the multifaceted, natural approach of Ayurveda is a well-suited option for managing your disorder.  Poor diet, compromised digestion, and sluggish elimination can lead to a buildup of toxins, creating blockages in channels of elimination. In addition, the accumulation of stress and the disruption of bodily rhythms due to a busy lifestyle can destabilize the nervous system, predisposing an individual to poor elimination.

Not everyone suffers from chronic constipation for the same reasons. Constipation can be influenced by many factors. Upon your arrival, your initial Ayurvedic evaluation with our experts will identify specific imbalances in the various functioning modes of the body. These underlying imbalances are the root causes of your condition and must be addressed if real healing is to occur. The Raj Ayurvedic approach to chronic constipation is a comprehensive one that balances many physiological functions simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions

According to Ayurveda, the following are the general types of imbalances at the source of most chronic conditions, including constipation:

  1. Toxins accumulating in tissues and blocking circulation.
  2. Poor nutrition.
  3. Poor digestion.
  4. Imbalance of the nervous system.
  5. Accumulation of physical and mental stress.
  6. Lowering of natural resistance and immunity.
  7. Disruption of natural biological rhythms.

The increase in the number of people suffering from chronic constipation can be linked to our modern lifestyle. Unbalanced food habits, dehydration, a hectic lifestyle, irregular sleeping patterns, and a lack of physical exercise are among the many factors that can lead to interrupted digestive patterns and depression of proper muscle mobility in the bowel area.

The ultimate goal of our Ayurvedic approach is to enliven the body’s natural healing and self-repair ability. This will not only to help address your constipation, but also to help prevent additional disorders and create an improved state of health and well-being. Ayurveda understands that every individual is different and that each person’s constipation, and path to wellness, will vary. This is why your initial Ayurvedic consultation at The Raj, which incorporates the traditional technique of Pulse Assessment, is such a key part of your program.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, the key underlying cause of chronic constipation is weak digestive power. Our ability to properly digest food is as important as what specific food we eat. When digestion of food is incomplete, it is not properly expelled by the intestines and causes the formation of ama (toxic mucus).

Ama is eventually absorbed into the digestive tract, travels throughout the physiology, localizes in the tissues, and disrupts proper functioning. This process plays a major role in a wide variety of chronic conditions, including constipation.
When metabolic residues develops continuously and accumulates in the gastrointestinal tract, it can disturb the delicate biochemistry of the area.

At the heart of your treatment program at The Raj are the traditional purification and purification therapies of Ayurveda, known as Panchakarma.

These luxurious and powerful treatments remove toxins and help to open the channels of circulation throughout the physiology. Opening the channels of circulation allows proper nourishment to reach the tissues and for impurities to be more easily eliminated.
The goal of our Ayurvedic approach is to enliven the body’s natural healing and self-repair ability. This will not only help address chronic constipation, but also to help prevent future disorders and create an improved state of health and well-being.

During your initial consultation at The Raj, our Ayurveda experts will use the ancient technique of Pulse Assessment determine your natural balance, how far you have fallen from your ideal state of health, and to identify specific areas of imbalance. This is important because people can have the same disorder for different reasons. Our experts will then design an integrated treatment approach to help restore a state of healthy balance. Purification treatments, herbal preparations, diet and specific life-style recommendations are given to support the body’s natural healing and self-purifying abilities.

Ayurveda focuses on creating positive health as well as eliminating disorders. The Raj Treatment Program for Chronic Constipation aims at eliminating the root cause of constipation rather than focusing on specific symptoms. Your treatment program will be customized for its effect on the entire mind/body system.

Certain foods can clog the physiology and depress proper muscle mobility in the bowel area. During your Raj Ayurvedic Program for Constipation, you will gain an understanding of which foods to favor and which are aggravating to your condition. You will learn to avoid foods that are hard to digest, clogging to the physiology, and that contribute to existing imbalances in your physiology. You will also get to know foods that are your friends: easy-to-digest, nourishing, with the ability to cleanse the physiology, strengthen digestion and help support your body’s inner intelligence.

One of the great strengths of the Ayurveda dietary approach is that it contains knowledge of how to have a light, easy-to-digest diet that still is both satisfying and nourishing. Many individuals have easily followed this diet and have improved their digestion and energy while also reducing their symptoms.

Chronic constipation is typically a sign of an imbalance in Vata dosha, but can also involve imbalances in Pitta and/or Kapha. The symptoms will differ slightly. Our approach is to balance all three doshas, bringing digestive power – and elimination – back to a more natural state.

According to Ayurveda, the physiological principle at the basis of nervous system stability and activation is called Vata. An imbalance of Vata in the large intestine can cause dryness, a slowing down of the peristaltic movements and a drying up of fecal matter, leading to constipation. Ayurveda offers a wide variety of time-tested recommendations to help restore balance to Vata, countering its cold and dry qualities and thus pacifying symptoms caused by its aggravation.

Because chronic constipation can also involve Pitta and Kapha, your initial Ayurvedic consultation at the beginning of your stay is of utmost importance. It allows The Raj Ayurvedic experts to identify the specific imbalances at the root of your individual condition.

One of the most important factors for maintaining healthy bowel functioning is to have a lifestyle that does not disturb natural bodily rhythms. When we eat, sleep and exercise in constantly fluctuating and disturbing patterns, the body loses its natural balancing cycles and cannot cleanse or heal itself as effectively. Therefore, regularity in our daily routine can be extremely effective in reducing physiological imbalance at the basis of constipation.
